Pre-K News!

Dear Families,
This week, we rhymed, rhymed, rhymed - inspired by author and illustrator Dr. Seuss! The children listened to many of the classics, including The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, The Butter Battle Book, Too Many Daves, Yurtle the Turtle, and McElligot’s Pool. We also read Green Eggs and Ham, which inspired green scrambled eggs for snack, and the Cat in the Hat Comes Back, which inspired lots of ‘at’ rhyming. The Lorax generated a discussion about helping the earth with a composting program that we will begin after Spring Break. Of course, Wacky Wednesday was the highlight, with lots of crazy hair, mismatched socks and wacky clothes!
We not only became authors and illustrators with the generation of three classroom-rhyming books, but we also met author and illustrator, Dan Gutman. Mimi read one of his books to the class on Wednesday, so we were prepared and excited to meet him on Thursday in the library.
The children contributed fun rhymes to our class books. The first book depicted a set of rhyming words offered by each child with an accompanying illustration, such as a ‘bee in a tree’ (thank you Rupi) or, ‘a dog on a frog’ (thank you Ava). The next book was inspired by Dr. Seuss’s book, There’s a Wocket in my Pocket. The children drew and cut out imaginary creatures that were captured in a photograph. “There’s a Woilet in the toilet!” was contributed by Henry Gaskell (thank you, Henry), and, “There’s a Beiling on the ceiling!”, was contributed by Jack (thank you Jack). The third book included photographs of each child performing a rhyme, such as, “I’m in the blocks with socks” (thank you Henry Gardner), or “I’m in the hall with a ball”, (thank you, Cole). Stop by the classroom and take a look!
On Tuesday morning, we saw the musical, School House Rock, performed by the 5th grade. It was wonderful! There were lots of familiar songs and great acting! In addition, the children wrote in their journals, practiced upper/lower case association, made cards to accompany the donations for the homeless, and practiced math with abacus problems.

NOTES:
- After spring break, half-day friends will be picked up on the circle. This will hopefully be easier for you, and will help the congestion in the front hallway. Please wait near the steps or in your car, and Sarah will bring the children outside around 12:05. Thanks!
- We’re sending blankets home for a quick wash

Dear Families,
Thank you for coming in for conferences! Sarah and I appreciate your thoughts and insight, and loved sharing your children's work with you.
This was our last week of community helpers, so Sarah and I sat back and watched the children teach each other. Their presentations were wonderful and will be posted in the hallway soon. Here are this week's community helpers. Hold your curser over the photo to see who they are!

Pre-K News!

Dear Parents,
Here is a peek into this week’s community helper highlights!
Airline Captain Baynes visited pre-k on Tuesday to share some his flying career with us. We were able to ask lots of question and share stories about airplane rides. He taught us about educational requirements, how high a plane flies (our guess of 50 inches was off by a bit), and about the turbo button on his current plane that makes it go faster. He inspired all of us to become pilots!
Dr. Seshadri visited on Wednesday and shared stories about how he helps people in our community. We guessed what tool is most important to him and were surprised to learn that it is his brain! He asks patients lots of questions and listens carefully to the answers, from which he learns the most.
On Thursday, Officer Marc (Satterfield) visited with friends and a member of the Police Canine Unit. We listened and learned about the role of a police officer, we saw Dusty the Canine in action, and we explored the police cars and listened to the siren. There was lots of dramatic play about catching 'bad guys' in the afternoon!
On Friday the class visited the Talleyville Fire Company. Sarah reports:The trip was wonderfully informative. We saw several trucks, equipment, the inside of an ambulance and a fully outfitted Fire Fighter. They even saw a real fire pole and pretended to drive a fire truck. The children were good listeners and respectful. Their homework tonight is to ask you what your family’s action plan is in the case of a fire emergency. After the fire station we walked to the post office and each student mailed a letter to him or herself. Thank you very much Lori, Brandon and Mike for coming with us!
Additional activities included 1) decorating two furniture boxes that became a fire truck and a jail in the classroom, 2) operating on patients in the classroom hospital, and 3) playing in the other community helper centers in the classroom, including a post office, school, chef center, veterinary clinic, and bank. We also wrote in journals, worked with the letter ‘M’, created language dictations entitled, A Day When I was Sick, and enjoyed a Hip Hop presentation at Gathering.
Notes:

Wednesday – Music
Thursday – Meeting for Worship and Spanish
Friday – No school for conferences
